How the Stranded Codes Work: The Note-Clue System
The clue system behind every MW4 Stranded keypad — how notes pair with locks, how the derived codes are built, and where each clue note sits on the map.
Stranded's keypads run on a single elegant rule: every code comes from a nearby note. Not a hint, not a minigame — a physical note in the game world, sitting within a short walk of the lock it opens. This page documents the system itself: how the pairings work, how the two derived codes are built, and where each clue note sits, for players who want to solve the mission rather than transcribe it.
The Pairing Rule
Every one of the seven keypads pairs with at least one note in its vicinity. For the five shipping containers, the pairing is direct: the note states the four-digit code, usually framed as logistical paperwork — inventories, dispatch records, requisition forms, the bureaucratic residue of an army that locked its own supplies and wrote the keys down. The note for the Jamming Station container (8609) sits at (666, 125), barely a stroll from the lock at (667, 125). The cliff container's note at (646, 149) mirrors its lock. The village bridge note at (652, 187), the Base Camp area note at (644, 158) and the river island note at (618, 132) complete the direct pairings.
The design lesson the containers teach: read your environment. Players who treat notes as decoration lock themselves out of loot that thorough players collect for free. The game never announces which note matters — it simply places truth in the world and lets attention sort the players.
The Derived Codes
The two bunkers escalate the rule from reading to comprehension. The farmland bunker (0330) wants the sum of four numbers — 10, 20, 100 and 200 — found across the Logistics outposts: no single note states the answer, and assembling it requires recognizing which outposts are Logistics posts and remembering what their signage said. The island bunker (0008) wants a count: the number of outposts along the river region, entered with the leading zero. Both derivations are retroactive — by the time you reach either keypad, the raw information has usually already crossed your screen, and the puzzle is whether you were paying attention to your own campaign.
This is why the derived codes are the system's crown: they convert gameplay into a combination. Clearing outposts is combat; remembering the Logistics numbers is play; typing their sum into a farmland hatch is the mission quietly asking whether you experienced it or merely completed it.
The Note-Lock Map
The full pairing table, for players planning clue-first routes:
| Lock | Code | Clue location |
|---|---|---|
| Jamming Station container | 8609 | (666, 125) — note beside the container |
| Village bridge container | 0078 | (652, 187) — note near the marker sign |
| Cliff container | 0600 | (646, 149) — note north of Base Camp |
| Signpost container | 1234 | (644, 158) — note in the Base Camp area |
| River island container | 6789 | (618, 132) — note on the island |
| Farmland bunker | 0330 | derived — four Logistics outposts (10+20+100+200) |
| Island bunker | 0008 | derived — count the river outposts |
The pattern in the coordinates: the direct clue notes cluster with their locks, and the two derived "clues" are the outpost network itself. A clue-first sweep — collect every note, then walk the locks — is genuinely viable and is how the mission plays on a completionist run, since the fifty-eight-note collectible set and the seven-lock loot set overlap heavily in the terrain they ask you to cross.
Why It Matters Beyond the List
A codes page is a shortcut, and shortcuts age: any patch could randomize the locks, and a list stops being true the day the numbers change. The system does not age. "Every code comes from a nearby note" was true of mission ten at launch, will be true after any rebalance, and — if the campaign's other missions adopt the pattern — is the skill that transfers. Players who learned to read Stranded's notes hold the master key; players who memorized seven numbers hold seven numbers.
The practical advice, then, is a blend: use the list to save time, but read at least one note pair in full — ideally one of the direct containers, then one of the derived bunkers — and the mission's lock system will have taught you what it was built to teach. The rest of this wiki holds the list; the country holds the lesson.
